Static GK & Current Affairs

Syllabus Unit: General Awareness

Why it matters

Chapter overview

SSC CGL's General Awareness section draws roughly a quarter of its questions from static GK — history, polity and geography — with the remainder split between science facts and the last 6-12 months of current affairs. This topic covers the four highest-yield static GK areas (history & culture, the Constitution's structure, physical geography, and economy/science institutions) along with a framework for keeping current affairs prep systematic rather than random.

1Indian History & Culture

SSC history questions cluster around three eras — ancient, medieval, and modern (1857 to Independence) — alongside a parallel culture track of monuments, dance forms and classical literature.

Learning Objectives

  • Recall key dynasties and rulers of ancient India: the Indus Valley Civilization, the Mauryan empire under Ashoka, and the Gupta 'Golden Age'.
  • Sequence the major phases of the Indian freedom struggle: the 1857 Revolt, formation of the INC (1885), Non-Cooperation, Civil Disobedience, Quit India, and Independence (1947).
  • Identify India's classical dance forms and their state of origin (Bharatanatyam-Tamil Nadu, Kathak-Uttar Pradesh, Kathakali-Kerala, Odissi-Odisha).
  • Match major monuments and UNESCO World Heritage sites to their builder and century.

Key Terms

Indus Valley CivilizationA Bronze Age civilization (c. 2500-1900 BCE) with major sites at Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, known for planned cities and advanced drainage systems.
Ashoka's DhammaThe Mauryan emperor Ashoka's policy of moral governance adopted after the Kalinga War (261 BCE), propagated through rock and pillar edicts across the empire.
Government of India Act, 1935The act providing a framework for provincial autonomy that heavily influenced the structure of India's future Constitution.
Classical Dance FormsEight recognized Indian classical dances, each tied to a specific state or region, e.g. Bharatanatyam (Tamil Nadu), Kathak (Uttar Pradesh), Kathakali (Kerala).

SSC history questions are dense with named dynasties, dates and events — the highest-yield approach is a clear chronological skeleton for each era, onto which individual facts can be hung.

Ancient India

  • Indus Valley Civilization (c. 2500-1900 BCE): planned cities at Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, advanced drainage, no deciphered script.
  • Mauryan Empire: Chandragupta Maurya founded it; Ashoka (r. c. 268-232 BCE) adopted Dhamma after the Kalinga War, spread via edicts.
  • Gupta Empire (c. 320-550 CE): called India's 'Golden Age' for advances in mathematics (zero), astronomy, and Sanskrit literature.

The freedom struggle, in order

  • 1857 Revolt — the first large-scale uprising against British rule.
  • 1885 — Indian National Congress founded.
  • 1920-22 — Non-Cooperation Movement (Gandhi).
  • 1930 — Civil Disobedience Movement (Dandi Salt March).
  • 1942 — Quit India Movement.
  • 1947 — Independence; 1950 — Republic (Constitution commences).
Exam TipC. Rajagopalachari was the only Indian to serve as Governor-General of India (1948-50) — Lord Mountbatten held the post immediately after independence in 1947.
